Initially composing scores for documentaries and TV serials and jingles for advertisements, Rahman got his big break in 1992, when Mani Ratnam approached him to compose the score for Roja. The score got him the Rajat Kamal at the National Awards and became an important composition for him.Rahman followed this with successful scores for several Tamil–language films, though his next significant work came with Ratnam's Bombay, where the music director received recognition for not only the songs, but also the background score.
